Gazelle Samizay is an Afghan American multimedia artist, curator, and writer whose work examines how political violence and systems of power shape what societies know, remember, and forget. Through video, installation, and participatory projects, she invites audiences to question inherited narratives and reconsider histories obscured by violence, displacement, and omission. She has exhibited internationally, including at Whitechapel Gallery (London), Gwangju Biennale (South Korea), Linden Museum (Germany), the de Young Museum, and the Slamdance Film Festival. Samizay’s work is in collections including LACMA, the Center for Photography at Woodstock, and En Foco. Her writing appears in One Story, Thirty Stories: An Anthology of Contemporary Afghan American Literature (University of Arkansas Press) and Decolonizing Afghanistan: Countering Imperial Knowledge and Power (Duke University Press). Samizay is the recipient of a Princess Grace Foundation Special Project Grant, as well as awards and residencies from Craft Contemporary and the San Francisco Arts Commission. She earned her MFA from the University of Arizona and lives in Portland, Oregon.
