Héctor Alvarez is a theater artist from Spain based in Los Angeles. His practice incorporates choreography, unconventional design, nontraditional casting, and the occasional release of 2,000 bouncy balls from the theater’s rafters to explore desire, mourning, the politics of representation, queerness, race, myth, and violence. He is a Watson Fellowship recipient and is currently working on an MFA in Directing at California Institute of the Arts and . Recent directing credits include Ota Shogo’s The Water Station, David Gaitan’s La Pura Idea Excita, Peter Handke’s Self-Accusation, and We’re Gonna Die, a film re-imagining of Young Jean Lee’s play. The film was created in isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic and was named one of Chicago’s 2020 Top Cultural Picks.
