Nominated by: Haystack Mountain School of Crafts
Robert and Gloria Hausman Theater Honor

Kate Russell (she/her), a theatremaker and poet, believes storytelling is at the heart of who we are. She is inspired by theatre as a collaborative craft to celebrate community, deepen belonging, and rediscover place. As the Founding Artistic Director of Threadbare Theatre Workshop, she adapts, directs, and devises plays in rural places with local people— currently Downeast on Wabanaki land. Kate’s work as a performer, director, and writer has been featured in The New York Times, American Theatre Magazine, The Creators Project, and Recipes for Self-Love. She holds a BFA in Theater from Rutgers, and spent her most formative year in residence at Shakespeare’s Globe. In 2018, Kate was invited as a Visiting Artist to Haystack– soon after, she made her home on an island off the coast of what we now call Maine.
